Cessna first created its Citation I in the 1970s (originally called the Citation 500) to compete against smaller jets which could land on shorter runways. It used turbofan engines instead of louder turboprops.

The Citation I S/P was also developed in order to give the model the ability to carry an extra passenger in the cockpit with just one pilot. The cabin of both versions is designed for six passengers and also contains a lavatory and a small refreshment center.
