Westwind I - Description

The Westwind I began as the Jet Commander under the manufacture of Aero Commander, which sold the rights to Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) after the first couple years. The new name Westwind I came with new modifications as well.

The resulting aircraft used Garrett TFE731 turbofan engines, flew on modified wings mounted halfway up the fuselage, and held a stretched cabin of 15.5 ft. The Westwind I also had increased maximum takeoff, landing, and zero-fuel weights in comparison with the earlier Jet Commander.

The spacious cabin can carry eight passengers comfortably, or nine with the use of the belted lavatory. Four reclinable seats are located in a club configuration. A fifth individual seat faces a three-place divan located across from the door. Travelers can make use of folding workstations, individual reading lights, and 9 cubic feet of onboard baggage space. In-flight noise is minimized by the placement of the engines behind the cabin.The Westwind I has range and speed capable of reaching many non-stop destinations, and cross-country flights require only one stop.
