Swearingen Metro - Description |
|
The Swearingen Metro (or Fairchild Metro) twin turboprop was designed as a longer, airliner version of the light Merlin executive transport. The Metro can carry 10 to 22 passengers in its pressurized cabin.
An enclosed lavatory with a sink is located aboard the Metro’s cabin for passenger comfort. Seating configuration typically contains eight rows of two, with one three-space bench at the rear. Seats can be removed to make room for extra luggage. The Metro also has a refreshment cabinet. As with the Merlin, many variants of the Metro have been produced with various improvements over the years. Engines used among the variants include TPE-331-3UW turboprops, TPE-331-10s, and Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6As.
Other modifications followed a similar track to those on the Merlin and included reduced cabin noise levels, higher maximum takeoff weights, improved economy due to a greater wing span, and redesigned "squared-oval" windows. Some variants of the Metro offer an external pod below the fuselage for extra baggage. And another variant has a higher passenger capacity of 25, with less baggage space. |
